Tips to manage, prevent and recover from the flu

By Patterson Health Center on January 28, 2025

Influenza A is a common strain of the flu virus and can cause mild to severe illness. As we're in the midst of flu season, here are some tips to manage, prevent, and recover from Influenza A:

 Prevention

1.    Get Vaccinated

  • Annual flu vaccines are highly effective in reducing the risk of Influenza A.

2.    Wash Hands Regularly

  • Use soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap isn't available.

3.    Avoid Close Contact

  • Stay away from people who are sick, and if you're feeling unwell, limit contact with others to prevent spreading the virus.

4.    Disinfect Surfaces

  • Clean frequently touched objects like doorknobs, keyboards, and phones.

5.    Practice Good Respiratory Hygiene

  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of tissues properly.

 Managing Symptoms

1.    Rest

  • Allow your body time to recover by getting plenty of sleep and taking it easy.

2.    Stay Hydrated

  • Drink water, herbal teas, or broths to prevent dehydration.

3.    Over-the-Counter Medications

  • Use pain relievers (like acetaminophen or ibuprofen) to reduce fever and aches.
  • Decongestants or antihistamines can help alleviate nasal congestion.

4.    Steam Therapy

  • Inhale steam to relieve nasal congestion and ease breathing.

5.    Eat Nutritious Foods

  • Focus on immune-boosting foods, like fruits, vegetables, and soups.

 When to See a Doctor

Seek medical attention if you experience:

  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath.
  • Persistent chest pain or pressure.
  • Severe dehydration (e.g., dizziness, confusion, or reduced urination).
  • High fever that doesn’t subside with medication.
  • Symptoms that worsen after initial improvement.

Antiviral medications like oseltamivir (Tamiflu), zanamivir (Relenza) or Baloxavir Marboxil (Xofluza) may be prescribed if taken early in the infection (within 48 hours of symptom onset).

Post-Recovery Tips

1.    Ease Back into Activities

  • Avoid strenuous activities until you're fully recovered.

2.    Continue Hydration and Nutrition

  • Focus on rebuilding energy with healthy meals.

3.    Monitor for Complications

  • Watch for lingering symptoms like a persistent cough, as they may signal complications like pneumonia.
