Dialysis
Patterson Health Center's dialysis program designed to provide essential care for patients with kidney-related conditions. With the addition of state-of-the-art dialysis machines, we are now able to offer life-saving treatment to those in need, right here in our community.
This new program has been made possible through the generous support of the Harper County Health Foundation and the community, who helped raise the funds for these machines and the program itself. Their commitment to improving healthcare in our region has played a pivotal role in making this important service available to our patients.
How Hemodialysis Helps Patients
Hemodialysis is a vital medical treatment for individuals whose kidneys are no longer able to function properly. It is a procedure that helps filter waste, salt, and excess fluids from the blood — functions normally carried out by healthy kidneys. For patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) or kidney failure, hemodialysis helps perform these critical functions, effectively taking over the work of the kidneys.
This treatment is essential for:
- Clearing toxins and waste from the blood, preventing dangerous build-ups.
- Regulating fluid balance to avoid issues like swelling and high blood pressure.
- Maintaining electrolyte balance, including potassium and calcium levels, which are crucial for heart and muscle function.
For those with kidney failure, dialysis is not just life-saving — it’s life-enhancing. Regular treatments can help patients feel better, improve their overall health, and significantly improve their quality of life. Dialysis can also help patients lead more normal, active lives by preventing complications associated with kidney failure.
Reducing the Burden of Travel
Before this program, many patients had to travel at least an hour three times a week to receive their necessary dialysis treatments. The launch of the dialysis program at Patterson Health Center eliminates the need for long-distance travel, providing patients with the convenience of receiving treatment close to home. This reduces the physical, emotional, and financial burdens of travel, making it easier for patients to access the care they need while staying closer to their families and support networks.
The dialysis machines at Patterson Health Center provide patients with the critical care they need to manage kidney disease, offering a more convenient and accessible option for local treatment. With this program, we hope to enhance the quality of life for our community members and reduce the need for long-distance travel for treatment.
We are grateful to the Harper County Health Foundation for their continued support and for making this vital service a reality. The new dialysis program is a testament to the power of community collaboration and a step forward in improving healthcare access for all.
